Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is transforming how modern industries operate by enabling connected systems, real-time data flow, and secure communication. This course focuses on the core principles of Industrial IoT, helping learners understand how industrial processes, devices, and data interact within smart environments.

You will explore industrial processes, sensors, actuators, and data flow while learning how information moves across systems. The course also covers key industrial protocols and introduces cybersecurity practices essential for protecting IIoT infrastructures, enabling you to analyze and support secure implementations.

What sets this course apart is its balance of foundational theory and practical insights, supported by real-world examples and structured exercises. This approach ensures you gain both conceptual clarity and the ability to apply knowledge in industrial contexts.

This course is ideal for beginners, IT professionals, and engineers interested in Industrial IoT systems. No prior experience is required, though basic technical awareness will be beneficial.

This course is part one of a three-course Specialization designed to provide a comprehensive learning pathway in this subject area. While it delivers standalone value and practical skills, learners seeking a more integrated and in-depth progression may benefit from completing the full Specialization.

Lehrplan

  • Introduction to Industrial IOT
  • This module explores the foundational concepts of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), examining the technologies and factors enabling its rapid growth. Learners will discover real-world industrial use cases and understand how analytics and artificial intelligence are transforming data-driven decision-making in industrial environments.
  • Understanding the Industrial Process and Devices
  • This module explores how industrial data is generated, collected, and transmitted from factory devices to the cloud. Learners will examine the roles of sensors, transducers, actuators, and edge devices, as well as the standards and protocols that enable data acquisition and process control in modern industrial environments.
  • Industrial Data Flow and Devices
  • This module explores the journey of industrial data from sensors and actuators through converters, controllers, and communication protocols, up to enterprise-level systems like SCADA, MES, and ERP. Learners will gain an understanding of how data is measured, processed, transmitted, and managed across various layers of industrial automation. Key concepts include device roles, data conversion, control strategies, and the integration of software systems for effective factory management.
  • Implementing the Industrial IoT Data Flow
  • This module explores how legacy industrial systems can be integrated with modern Industrial IoT architectures. Learners will examine key protocols such as OPC Classic and OPC UA, understand edge device architectures, and evaluate the roles of PLCs and SCADA systems in IIoT data flow. Practical scenarios illustrate how data is exchanged and managed from the factory floor to the cloud.
  • Applying Cybersecurity
  • This module explores practical strategies for implementing cybersecurity in industrial control networks, focusing on the use of firewalls and network segmentation. Learners will examine different architectures for network separation and understand how to secure edge devices using OPC DCOM and OPC UA protocols. By the end, participants will be equipped to apply best practices for protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats.
  • Performing an Exercise Based on Industrial Protocols and Standards
  • This module introduces key industrial communication protocols, focusing on the evolution of OPC from its original architecture to the modern Unified Architecture (UA). Learners will also explore the role of edge devices in IIoT systems and gain hands-on experience installing and configuring a simple edge client.
