Tuberculosis:

A relentless scourge of humanity for millennia, tuberculosis remains the deadliest infectious disease, second only to SARS-CoV-2. Despite a slow global decline in cases, it surpasses both HIV and malaria in mortality rates.

This latency is due to the disease's protracted development period and the necessity of a minimum six-month multi-drug chemotherapy course for cure. In most individuals, the infection lies dormant, potentially reactivating years later, leading to severe illness.

Over the past three decades, the rise of multidrug resistance has exacerbated treatment challenges, complicating efforts to combat the disease.
