Overview

With the rapid development of urbanization and rural revitalization in China, vernacular landscapes face the risk of being overshadowed by modern landscape design techniques. These landscapes are vital expressions of regional life, culture, and the way humanity adapts the natural environment for living and production needs. As profound imprints, they serve as spiritual sustenance for generations, contributing significantly to the cultural and regional character.

This course offers a fresh perspective on vernacular landscapes. Delving into the origins of rural landscapes, students will explore the evolution of these areas through an eastern and western lens. By flying over the Loess Plateau, students can witness the unique traditional kilns of northern Shaanxi and experience the artistry of Little Jiangnan in northwest China. The course invites students to look back at the mysterious Green moss and Green trees of the Qinling mountains.

Engage with the charm and dynamic energy of vernacular landscape patterns. Investigate changes in materials, uncover the meanings and construction methods of native plants, and appreciate the wisdom and depth of rural landscapes. This course aims to inspire interest and awareness of rural landscapes, urging students to inherit and protect these cultural treasures.

Vernacular landscapes are integral to the memory and identity of every region, embodying the essence or 'soul' of its culture. Protecting these landscapes is crucial for safeguarding our collective memory and regional cultural identity. By studying rural landscapes, this course aspires to contribute to their preservation and appreciation, ensuring they remain a vibrant part of our cultural heritage.
