Overzicht

Embark on a pioneering journey into the world of Generative Art and Computational Creativity, a course offered by Kadenze. This introductory course, the first in a compelling two-part program, takes a deep dive into the history, theories, and practices of generative arts and computational creativity.

Guided by Philippe Pasquier, Associate Professor at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University and a renowned multi-disciplinary researcher, students will uncover the intricacies of generative art through a comprehensive curriculum.

From the foundational mathematics and artificial intelligence to the nuances of artificial life, the course dissects the core techniques employed by contemporary artists, designers, and musicians. Topics such as chance operations, chaos theory, fractals, stochastic processes, and rule-based approaches will be thoroughly explored to understand their role in creative industries.

The course further delves into complex concepts like agents and multi-agent systems, cellular automata, and virtual ecosystems, showcasing their capability to foster unique and impactful creations.

Illustrated with an array of examples from a wide spectrum of creative practices—including visual art, new media, music, poetry, literature, performing arts, design, architecture, games, robot-art, bio-art, and net-art—the course promises an enriching learning experience. Students will engage with these algorithms hands-on, crafting new generative pieces through assignments and projects using MAX.

In addition to its technical aspects, the course opens a dialogue on the philosophical and societal implications of automating creative tasks, enriched by the musical compositions created specifically for this course using the StyleMachineLite Max for Live engine by Metacreative Inc., under the artistic direction of Philippe Pasquier and contributions from Arne Eigenfeldt and Philippe Bertrand.

Students who have taken the course describe it as "enriching and complete," appreciating the breadth of artists and fields covered, the up-to-date course content, and the thoughtfully designed coursework that not only solidifies learning but also encourages personal artistic advancement.

Offered by Kadenze, this course falls under several categories including Artificial Intelligence Courses, Generative Art Courses, Mathematics Courses, Literature Courses, Music Courses, Visual Arts Courses, and Games Courses, making it a perfect fit for individuals eager to explore the intersection of creativity and technology.
