Overview

Stakeholder Collaboration: Organizing for Environmental Justice and Equitable Solutions

This course is a collaboration between the University of Maryland College Park’s Project Management Center for Excellence and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. While each course stands alone, this series provides the knowledge, skills, and frameworks to lead projects that address socio-environmental problems.

Building on the foundation of successful Stakeholder Outreach, this course guides you in addressing complex socio-environmental problems. These issues are identified, measured, and distilled into a narrative that engages stakeholders, propelling them into effective collaboration.

Collaboration is essential due to the complexity of environmental problems. Such issues lack clear definitions and persistently evolve, necessitating continual reassessment. These problems involve multiple perspectives and incomplete information, making it impossible for a single party to address them alone. Overcoming these challenges requires engaging diverse representatives to combine their unique knowledge and perspectives.

This approach is known in science as “Transdisciplinary Approaches” and in Project Management as “cross-disciplinary” and “cross-organizational” problem solving. Environmental Project Management uniquely involves organizing rights holders impacted by these problems, adding an extra layer of complexity. Only by rallying these groups can the comprehensive understanding of the problems begin.
