Overview

Explore the evolving landscape of work and its implications for the future in the course "Work and Employment for a Sustainable Future" offered by edX. This course delves into the historical and prospective dynamics of national economies, the rise of automation, and its impact on job availability and conditions.

Despite technological advancement leading to increased productivity, this has not universally translated into more job opportunities or adequate income for many. With over 204 million individuals unemployed in 2015, the International Labour Organization highlights a pressing need for over 600 million new jobs by 2030 to accommodate the expanding working-age population. Additionally, there is an urgent requirement to enhance work conditions for approximately 780 million employed individuals earning insufficiently to emerge from poverty.

Centering on SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, this extensive seven-module MOOC investigates income, employment trends globally, barriers to employment, and strategies to foster economic opportunities. The course touches on entrepreneurship, job creation, and eradicating forced labor, slavery, and human trafficking as pathways to achieving these Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Essential for policy professionals, development practitioners, and higher education students in economics and development, this course provides critical insight into achieving productive employment and decent work for all by 2030. It concludes with a special segment from the ILO on realizing these aspirations in tandem with SDG 8.

Categories include Career Development, Sustainability, and various SDGs covering Innovation, Peace, Poverty Reduction, Hunger, Climate Action, Partnerships, Reducing Inequalities, Sustainable Cities, Education, Economic Growth, Responsible Consumption, and more.
