Overview
About the Course:
Additive manufacturing (AM) refers to the layer-by-layer deposition of materials to create objects as per their design, playing crucial roles in various sectors, such as aerospace, transportation, energy, and healthcare. Various AM processes are utilized globally for these applications. This course, founded on extensive research and an existing NPTEL course, begins with an introduction to key AM processes that hold significant societal importance and the fundamentals of Engineering Materials.
The course delves into basic concepts of materials science, focusing on the structure and properties of metals, ceramics, and polymers, catering to students from various academic backgrounds. It further explores three primary AM processes: binderjet 3D printing, laser-based powder bed fusion/directed energy deposition, and extrusion printing of soft materials.
A significant focus is placed on the quantitative spatio-temporal kinetics of binder-material interactions using theoretical models and experimental measurements in binderjet and extrusion 3D printing. For laser-based 3D metal printing, the course covers intrinsic heat transfer at the weld pool and microstructure development induced by rapid solidification. The application of 3D printing is explored in contexts like presurgical clinical planning and functional tissue constructs for regenerative engineering.
The course also highlights the potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning in predicting AM process parameters and the quality of AM parts. It addresses the challenges associated with 3D printing in microgravity conditions, also known as space bioprinting.
